Let's face the truth here - most gamers are assholes. This is evident when you join a MW2 lobby and half of the people have names that are sexually gratuitous, racist, or just plain stupid. Not to be funny, not to be clever (Hugh Jass, I'm talking to you) but to infuriate or cause reaction.
My problems aren't with idiocy. There's a mute button for a reason and killing "IPWNYOU111" is always fun. It's with behavior and conduct. There's no etiquette or decency at all. Since the internet is anonymous these people only need to switch their user names to avoid any guilt.
People can do whatever they want short of downloading an aimbot with no repercussions from any type of authority. This could be exploiting (care packages), harassing other players, which isn't limited to typing (friendly fire to be an asshole). There is no vote kick, no temporary bans, or any way to block playing with this player again.
I understand on the opposite end you can have a dictator-like admin banning and kicking people unfairly but a player can simply go somewhere else. In MW2, the player can back out and literally be thrown back into the same game.
I've recently started browsing a hacker forum and realized in MW2 has spawned probably the perfect environment for hackers to work. The community is large and enthusiastic about circumventing the latest patches and insuring they have some advantage over normal players. (There is a thread about getting your game replaced for free if you get banned).
These players think they're somehow "getting back" at IW for snubbing the PC community. Or for the most part, like I said, are just assholes. There are hacks (texture hacks) that VAC does not ban for (to my knowledge VAC only looks for Aimbot and wallhacking and I still see plenty of these guys). What happens after a year or so when MW2 is no longer a priority for IW and Steam? We'll just be playing Combat Arms.
Console gamers do not need dedicated servers but we do. It's simply too easy for assholes to hack or take the fun out of the game. IW and Steam can not battle these people on their own nor will they once they move on to their next cash cow.
